A magnetic pin locator (often called a magnetic locator) is designed specifically to locate ferrous metals metals that contain iron or steel. They are highly effective for detecting buried property markers, rebar, iron pipes, valve boxes, and survey markers under soil or snow.
Metals Detected by Magnetic Pin Locators:
Iron: Cast iron, wrought iron, and iron pipes.
Steel: Rebar, steel survey stakes, stainless steel (depending on alloy), and steel casing.
What They Do Not Detect:
Unlike standard metal detectors, magnetic locators ignore non-ferrous materials such as aluminum, copper, brass, gold or aluminum cans. This selectivity allows surveyors and contractors to locate magnetic steel/iron objects without interference from trash.
